Poetry Anthologies compile a bunch of poems in one book for easy perusal. Some gather together poems from all over (such as the "Norton Anthology of Poetry"). Others corral poems from a community of poets ("Anthology of Mexican Poetry") or around a theme ("Gay & Lesbian Poetry in Our Time").

Welcome all to the 08/09 academic year. There's a buzz around campus with everyone getting adjusted to their new schedules.

In the library, there are some changes to report that we're all excited about. First, as of yesterday, connecting the the web through our wireless service got a lot easier. You not longer have to connect through a VPN. If you have questions or need help connecting, librarians and technicians are always available at the information desk here in the library.

We are still piloting our new virtual reference service. This service allows you to ask questions from anywhere during business hours. Check it out at http://www.greenriver.edu/library/contact/Meebo.shtm.

One Book

Our campus community will engage in the One Book program for the 2008/2009 academic year. The program encourages everyone on the campus to read the same book at the same time. We will host educational events, reading groups, and other related activities. Faculty and adjunct instructors have the opportunity to participate in PAID curriculum development workshops this summer and fall, and can receive FREE student copies of the book if using it as a course text.

The One Book selection committee is pleased to announce the book for the 2008/2009 academic year:

Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi
Persepolis is a powerful memoir of a young girl growing up and living through the devastating changes of the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The story is presented in graphic format with simple, elegant drawings.

Instructors who would like to participate in PAID curriculum development workshops or receive free books for use in courses should contact librarian Katy Dichter as soon as possible (kdichter@greenriver.edu or ext. 2102).

Duplex Printing: Save Trees

It is now possible to print duplex (two-sided) in the library! By summer quarter, duplex (two-sided) should be the default setting. But if you want to print duplex now, you can choose that option.

Duplex printing also saves you money. If you print two pages of information on two pages of paper, it will cost you 20 cents. However, if you print two pages of information on one page of paper, using duplex printing, it will cost you 10 cents.

If you are printing an assignment, please check with your instructor to make sure that they will accept double-sided assignments.

Washington Rural Heritage Project

If you love local history, the Washington Rural Heritage Project will excite you! "Washington Rural Heritage (WRH) is an online aggregation of special collections from small and rural communities throughout the state of Washington. It features items important to Washington's history, culture, places, and people. "

"Ritzville Heritage was the first collection added to Washington Rural Heritage, an online collection of items from small and rural communities in Washington State. It includes images, documents, newspapers, and more that document the history of Ritzville in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries."

The images included here are the "Jaycee Cattle Parade" which is described as "Steers in procession through downtown Ritzville on "D" street (now Washington St.)" and "Washington Water Power promoting the electric stove by having cooking classes conducted and attended by men. "Watch for more areas to be added soon.

To anyone who heard the story on NPR this morning about the Darwin Online Collection, here is a sample recipe (for Gingerbread) from Emma Darwin's cookbook.

The Darwin Online Collection "contains [Charles] Darwin's complete publications, thousands of his private papers and the largest Darwin bibliography and manuscript catalogue ever published; also hundreds of supplementary works: biographies, obituaries, reviews, reference works and more."

April Jensen, who has been the college’s Executive Vice President for nearly nine years, finishes out our week of National Library Week Read posters. April has chosen Therese Raquin by Emile Zola. When asked why she chose this book, she explained “I was a French major in college (and beyond), and although I specialized in the language/linguistics side, I always loved 19th century novels. Emile Zola was the instigator of the "naturalism" period in France, which strove to depict the harsh realities of people's lives and their environment. Therese Raquin is a wonderfully written, but rather dismal look at human nature--a young married woman has an affair with another man, and between them they plot and kill her husband. But his mother, with whom she lived, knows what happened but has been struck unable to speak, and must witness all the horror of the murder and its aftermath. The two murderers end up being horrifically punished for their sin. Grim stuff, but somehow it has affected me for the 35 years since I read that book!”

Journey with Student Saundrea Polk

Student Saundrea Polk began attending GRCC in Fall 2007, and she is a member of our women’s basketball and fast pitch teams. Although born in Germany, she lived much of her life in Georgia before moving to the Seattle area where she finds her hands are always cold. She is very interested in traveling and would like to play basketball in Spain after playing for a four-year school in the United States. Saundrea is working towards an Associate in Arts degree and is interested in Spanish and Business.

Saundrea loves Maya Angelou’s writing because she “touches people everywhere with her words and inspires them to be better people.” Saundrea chose Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now by Angelou as her Read poster book because she writes “… about living well, about the power of a word, and about the power of spirituality to move and shape your life.” We asked GRCC reading instructor Harry Rosemond, who posed for his own Read poster last year, to recommend a student from one of his reading classes. So, we are pleased to have Saundrea, one of his former students, as a reading advocate for 2008.

Terri Does Talk to Strangers

Terri Thayer is the supervisor for CAP, or the Commencement Achievement Program, which helps first-year, under-represented students and students of color navigate the college campus and services. Terri has been at the college for two years and is featured in the third Read poster that we’ve created for National Library Week. She chose to pose with Never Talk to Strangers by Irma Joyce and explained that “This is the first book that I remember from my childhood. My parents would read the “classic” Golden Books but this one was my favorite. I’ve saved it all these years because of the important memories it has for me.” We are guessing that Terri does talk to strangers now, as she works with our new students.

The Little Engine that Could: Sylvia Mantilla

Faculty member Sylvia Mantilla is retiring after 38 years at GRCC. She was very active in the faculty union, serving as president for four years and secretary for “years and years.” Although her background is in Medieval Studies, Sylvia was hired to teach developmental writing. Being the division chair for fifteen years, she said she taught many classes that she wasn’t originally hired to teach, including medical terminology. Sylvia’s book choice, The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper, reflects on her childhood home two blocks from the railroad tracks in Nebraska and her years of teaching children’s literature at GRCC. Thank you, Sylvia, for all you’ve done for GRCC and for our students. We wish you well in your retirement.

Reggie Redmond's Read Poster Celebrates National Library Week

Holman Library is excited to again be celebrating National Library Week with our very own Read Posters. You've probably seen the American Library Association versions with celebrities, and now you can see some GRCC celebrities. Each day this week we will be revealing a new poster. Be sure to check back daily to see the latest!

Like last year, Julie Spiers (Communications and Program Marketing) did the photography and aided Katy Dichter and Brenda Philip when they were stuck. Thanks also go to William Stence, IT student worker in the library, for technical assistance.

For many of you, the first face you see each week, besides that of your spouse or children, is Reggie Redmond’s. So, we’ve chosen Reggie to be the first of five Read posters we will reveal to celebrate National Library Week. If you enter campus via the west entrance, you will recognize Reggie as the person who smiles and waves at you each morning from the booth. In fact, if you arrive on campus really early, and Reggie is not yet in his booth, he will wave to you as he locks up his car. Although Reggie is too busy waving to read, he has posed with an issue of Popular Mechanics. One might think that Reggie would get tired of waving, but he enjoys waving in hopes that it will brighten people’s day. It does. Thanks Reggie!

150 BOOKS, 200 YEARS—LEWIS & CLARK BIBLIOGRAPHY

The Governor’s-appointed Washington Lewis and Clark Trail Committee, the Washington State Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, and the Washington State Library, a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, have partnered to produce this bibliography. It is the third bibliography the three partners have produced in honor of the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. The final bibliography will encompass the two hundred most significant books published about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Copies or reprints of nearly all the titles are available via interlibrary loan from the Washington State Library.

Washington Territorial Timeline

The Washington State Library has a number of web sources about Washington history. Included are several online presentations about Washington history, including the Washington Territorial Timeline. To recognize the 150th anniversary of the birth of Washington, the Washington State Archives has created a historical timeline of the Pacific Northwest and Washington Territory. This timeline covers the years of 1540-1899 in nine segments. With the help of pictures and documents from the State Archives, the timeline recounts the major political and social events that evolved Washington Territory into Washington State.

Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers

Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers allows you to search and read newspaper pages from 1900-1910 and find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present. Chronicling America is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). Ultimately, over a period of approximately 20 years, NDNP will create a national, digital resource of historically significant newspapers from all the states and U.S. territories published between 1836 and 1922. Currently you can view newspapers from the following states online: California, District of Columbia, Florida, Kentucky, New York, Utah, and Virginia.

Critical Mass -- the blog of the national book critics circle board of directors

The National Book Critics Circle recently announced its inaugural Best Recommended List. From now on, the intention is to have a monthly list. Votes were solicited from the NBCC's 800 members and former winners and finalists.

There are awards for fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

The Library Squirrel

Throughout November, library staff members have been keeping an eye on the Library Squirrel. He or she has been very busy creating a nest in a tree between the library and the parking lot. As the tree swayed, the squirrel would run up with a mouthful of leaves to build a nest that eventually was about two feet tall. Although squirrels apparently live alone, one day we thought we spotted two squirrels working on the same nest.

Unfortunately, a significant mid-month windstorm virtually destroyed the nest. Initially the squirrel(s) attempted to rebuild, but seem to have given up.

Holman Library Closed on Monday

Holman Library will be closed on Monday, November 12th in honor of Veteran's Day. The library will be open on Sunday, November 11th as usual from 1 PM - 7 PM.

Did you know that Veteran's Day was, for a while, held on the fourth Monday of October? For other Veteran's Day history information, check out The History of Veteran's Day.

Auburn is hosting the 42nd annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 10 at 11:00am. The parade boasts over 200 units, including over 25 marching bands, drill teams, honor guards, military units, veterans' units, military vehicles, community groups and much more. The parade travels west along Main Street to B Street NW.

Did you know that in Canada November 11th is called Remembrance Day and each year over half of Canadians, notably politicians and newscasters, will begin wearing artificial poppies about two weeks before Remembrance Day? Other countries also wear the poppy and it was a frenchwoman, E. Guerin, who introduced them. Real poppies began flourishing in France because of the lime from war rubble. A Canadian, John McCrae, wrote the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" which was first published on December 8th, 1915 in England, in Punch magazine.

Washington Center for the Book Announces 2007 Washington State Book Award Winners

The Washington Center for the Book at The Seattle Public Library announced that six books written by local authors are winners of the 2007 Washington State Book Awards.

The 2007 Washington State Book Award winners are:
Fiction: "The Dead Fish Museum" by Charles D'Ambrosio, who now lives in Portland, Ore. (Alfred A. Knopf)

Poetry: "Spectral Waves" by Madeline DeFrees, of Seattle's Ballard neighborhood (Copper Canyon Press)

History/Biography: "James Tiptree Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon by Julie Phillips, who now lives in Amsterdam (St. Martins Press)

General Nonfiction: "River of Memory: The Everlasting Columbia" by William D. Layman, of Wenatchee (University of Washington Press)

"Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant" a picture book by Jack Prelutsky (author), of Bainbridge Island, and Carin Berger (illustrator), of New York City (Greenwillow Books)

"Grand & Humble," a novel by Brent Hartinger, of Tacoma (Harper Tempest)

The authors of the six award-winning books, as well as the illustrator of the picture book, will receive a $1,000 honorarium, thanks to the generous support of The Seattle Public Library Foundation and Eulalie and Carlo Scandiuzzi.

Librarian Wendy Graham Passes Away

It is with deep sadness that we let you know of the passing away of our longtime friend and library colleague Wendy Graham. Wendy served as a part-time librarian for GRCC since 1998. She also served a one-year interim appointment as the faculty collection development librarian during the 2000-01 academic year. Wendy will be remembered as a kind and generous person who always put students first.

Messages of condolence and remembrance can be sent to: The Graham Family, 355 White River Drive, Pacific, WA 98047.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2007, at the Pacific Senior Center, 100 3rd Ave SE Pacific, WA 98047 (253) 931-8289. The time of the service is not yet decided.

Computer Access

It is the beginning of the quarter, and time for students to obtain or update their password for using the computers in the library. When you use a computer, you will be prompted for a username and password. Your username is your student ID number. The password you get to choose yourself and to do this simply click the "Reset Password" button. Each quarter you need to update your password.

DVDs in New Location

We recently moved the DVDs to a new location. They are still on the second floor, but now they are at the south end, near the Help Center. If you have visited our Current Periodicals section, you will know where to find our DVDs. As always, the empty DVD cases are stored upstairs. Washington Reads: Selections from the State Librarian

Jan Walsh, Washington's State Librarian, creates a quarterly list of reading suggestions for Washington residents called Washington Reads. The topic for Spring 2007 was "Hidden People" and "features some unusual books that bring light and exposure to what is so often invisible. These books put people and personalities to the labels that they have been given and bring to life the hidden people."

Previous topics have included Diversity, Courage, the Olympic Peninsula, the Tastes of Washington, the Oregon Trail, the Geology of Washington, etc. The suggested readings cover all age ranges from children to adults.

Washington Reads was started in Fall 2003 on the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the State Library's first books. Chosen books are related to Washington life. Two copies of each book will be available for check-out from the Washington State Library and other libraries in the state. The GRCC library may have some of the books. If your local library doesn’t own a book, you can request it through interlibrary loan.

Speed Reading, Behrbaum Style

Although Anita and Mike Behrbaum must be the fittest campus couple, they still make time to read. Anita and Mike have been teaching health and physical education at GRCC since 1990 and 1974 respectively. In addition to reading student papers, Mike reads to stay current in the ever-changing health, fitness, and wellness field, and Anita reads because "reading enables me to build perspective I can gain nowhere else."

Anita's book of choice is The Autobiography of Malcolm X (by Malcolm X and Alex Haley) which she read in college and a few times since. Anita says that the book "allowed me, on some level, to experience the life of Malcolm X which was eye-opening and extraordinary." Mike chose to be photographed running with The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm, "because Fromm’s emphasis on active love shaped his perspective on relationships."

This is the last of five special GRCC Read posters developed for National Library Week. The posters will be displayed in the library, so come on over and have a look at the originals! Many people helped make these posters possible. Special thanks to those who agreed to pose and to those who helped produce them, especially Julie Spiers, Ann Lovell, and Jennifer Dysart. GRCC President Rich Rutkowski has chosen The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century by Thomas L. Friedman as his Read poster book. Friedman, a Middle East specialist, is the New York Times Foreign Affairs Columnist and the winner of the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary. The World is Flat is in its 104th week on the New York Times best seller list.

Inspired by the American Library Association Read posters, this is the fourth in a series of five GRCC Read posters that we are unveiling this week. Julie Spiers, a graphic designer in the GRCC Publications office, did a wonderful job of photographing all our subjects.

At one time Harry Rosemond was a professional football player, but now he makes his living reading, or at least teaching others how to read. Along with reading, Harry has taught study skills at GRCC for 15 years. Harry's book of choice is Becoming a Master Student by Dave Ellis, the textbook for Harry's Study Skills 110 class. Harry is currently a member of the Library Advisory Committee, and he is one of the friendliest people on campus.

GRCC's student government joined our National Library Week celebrations by posing for a "Read" poster.

How to Move to Canada: A Primer for Americans by Terese Loeb Kreuzer with Carol Bennett was the choice of Chief Justice Chelsea Fletcher (right). Chelsea plans on moving and settling in Canada. She describes the book as "helpful, to the point, and gives a great overview of how to immigrate and where to live. Calgary here I come!!"

President Amanda Brown (center) is "a huge Wizard of Oz fan" so she felt compelled to read the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

The choice of Vice President Cash Chen (left) was Sports Illustrated's 2007 NCAA Tournament Preview. Cash loves many sports, and in particular he likes basketball and March Madness. Cash appreciates the greater depth of analysis in Sports Illustrated as compared to television. Also, as an international student, he thinks reading is a great way to improve his English skills.

National Library Week -- Read Posters

April 15-21 is National Library Week, and the library will be celebrating with a new "Read" poster each day. You've probably seen them, American Library Association posters with celebrities such as Orlando Bloom or Hilary Swank posing with a favorite book. GRCC has its own celebrities, and one of them is Lee Semsen, who will be retiring at the end of spring quarter after 29 years as a librarian at GRCC. In the poster, Semsen is posed with the bible of cataloguing, The Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index or the DDC for short. Speaking of the Bible, National Library Week was started in 1958 by a group of publishers, booksellers, librarians, and journalists after a 1955 Gallup poll revealed that 61% of American adults had not read any books, except the Bible, in the preceding year.

New Reference Books

Holman Library receves new books on a daily basis. Below are reviews written by Wendy Graham of two new reference books.

Wilson, Jeffrey, ed. Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law. 2nd ed. 2 vols. Detroit : Thomson Gale, 2006. R349.73 G151 2006

I like this reference. I have already used it several times to answer students’ research questions. For example, Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law provided the information a student needed on “taking” of property by the government, and eminent domain. It also answer my question on accommodations required for deaf and hard-of-hearing people at public meetings. Subjects are divided into topics, with complete articles. For example, under Labor Law are articles on benefits, drug testing, labor unions, unemployment compensation and wage and hour laws. Each article includes additional resources for information. The index is excellent, and is the best way to locate specific information in the encyclopedia. Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law is my new “go to” resource for legal information.

Okay, I will keep my review focused on the book and not get political. Entries are listed chronologically. Volume 1 covers George Washington to Woodrow Wilson; Volume 2 covers Warren G. Harding to our current president, George W. Bush. Volume 2 also includes the U.S. Constitution and amendments, law of presidential succession (Nancy Pelozi could potentially become President), a time line for each president, Presidential election returns from 1789 to 2004, vice presidents, Cabinet members by administration, and executive departments and offices. Each article includes the president’s date and place of birth and death, political party, vice president, and cabinet members. Also within the entry are short articles on the first lady and vice-president. Entries discuss the President’s early life, career, philosophy and effect on our nation. Entries are illustrated, and conclude with recommendations for further research. I found American Presidents very interesting to review, and it will be a useful resource for the student learning about the U.S. presidents and the presidency.

NetLibrary E-book of the Month

Holman Library has purchased over 4400 e-books (electronic books) provided through NetLibrary. In addition, each month NetLibrary provides access to a free e-book, and the book for March is Ireland Adventure Guide by Irish native Tina Neylon. Readers will learn about "the astonishing treasures of this ancient island, showing travelers how to experience Ireland directly and intensely — as a participant and not just a spectator. Free access to this resource provides valuable information for anyone planning a trip to Ireland, including learning how to join in the pub life of Dublin or meet Ireland's people through its theater and music groups. Little known historic sites, such as the lake where St. Patrick first landed in 442 AD, are highlighted, as are some of the finest golf courses in the world. Time Archives

It is now possible to view the archives of Time magazine via the internet. The archives, available at www.time.com/time/archive, provide access to articles as far back as 1923. You can search by topic or browse by general time period (e.g.: December 1941). In addtion, there are specific collections (Modern Art, Scientology, Person of the Year, etc.).

A "New Pop Records" article from April 2, 1956, is the first time that Elvis is mentioned in Time: "Heartbreak Hotel (Elvis Presley; Victor). A new singer with a new twist: a double voice that alternates between a high, unpleasant quaver, reminiscent of Johnnie Ray at his fiercest, and a rich basso that might be smooth if it were not for its spasmodic delivery. Heartbreak Hotel, yelps the high voice, is where he's going to get away from it all. Answers the basso: he'll be sorry."

Library Building's 10th Anniversary

This year, Holman Library is celebrating ten years in its present building. With the move to the new building, the library left behind an approximately 20,000 square foot space and mushroomed into its new 60,000 square foot building. Library and media services are provided on both floors: however, we share this space with the Help Center and part of the Information Technology department. In addition, the Holman Library building includes Project Teach, the Helen S. Smith Gallery, and several computer classrooms.

The photograph on the left appeared in The Current on April 19, 1996 and shows what the library looked like eight months prior to opening day.

We call the second floor of the library the Information Commons and it contains over 140 networked workstations which provide access to various online databases, Microsoft Office, and the Internet. Before our move in 1997, there were approximately 12 computers for student use available in the old library. Above is a current photograph taken by Ann Lovell early one morning, before the rush of students arrive at 7AM.

Back in 1997 one of our goals was to buy specialized programs for foreign language and foreign exchange students. We finally accomplished that last year with the addition of Rosetta Stone, language-learning software used by government agencies, major corporations, and colleges and universities worldwide. The languages available to GRCC users through Rosetta Stone include: English, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, and Japanese.

Another goal was to add databases for social science, psychology, applied science and biology. We now have over thirty research databases including three large general databases which cover all disciplines. In addition we have subject-specific databases for biography, business, careers, education, health, history, and literature. If it weren’t for the student technology fee, which was approved at the time we moved into the new building, the library would not be able to provide this wealth of databases.

In 1997 we envisioned a future collection of 40,000 volumes. We now have over 56,000 volumes in the collection, along with about 300 periodical subscriptions. Something we could not have envisioned ten years ago is our collection of 4400 electronic books and our database of electronic reference books.

Another thing we could not have envisioned ten years ago was the appeal of our building. We have students working individually, in groups, and simply using the library as a meeting place between classes. Daily we have 2750 patrons in our library and, as a result, we have had to retrofit a silent study space on the first floor to provide a place for those trying to avoid the noise upstairs.

As always, if you are trying to access the databases from outside of the library, you will need to provide your GRCC student or employee identification number.

Of course, in order to add new databases, we chose not to renew some. We no longer have access to either the Psychology Journals or the Science Journals collections from ProQuest. We switched our ERIC and CINAHL access from ProQuest to EBSCO.

The collection was made public on October 10th , 2006 and we’ve had 403 circulation transactions since that time. The check out period is 1 week with a 1-week renewal. Five items can be checked out at one time. The collection is located in the library lobby.

As with all our collections, our focus is primarily on purchasing items that are tied to the curriculum. However, it includes a wide range of music genres, and we continue to add to the collection. Examples of music genres we currently have include:

Library Building Survives Storm

The big wind storm of December 14th uprooted two large trees between Holman Library and the RLC building. Although the trees crushed a bike rack, knocked down a smaller tree, and damaged signage, they only only left a scrape down the front of the building. Fortunately no one was hurt, and even the bike in the rack was salvaged! Power was out until late the next day.

As Winter Quarter begins, here are a few reminders to get your quarter off to a good start:

• New passwords are required each quarter to use the computers in the library
• Identification cards are needed to check out library materials and they can be made at the library or the bookstore
• The library has lots of material (books, journals, databases, etc.) that will come in useful during your education. Ask a librarian for help at the Reference Desk upstairs!

The Big Read

The charity remains the same--Keep a Child Alive--so please come out and support us as we raise funds for this charity that provides AIDS medication to those in developing countries. On Wednesday, November 29, 2006, 9am to 2pm Holman Library will be hosting a bake sale during AIDS Awareness Week to benefit Keep A Child Alive an organization which provides lifesaving medicine to children and families with AIDS in Africa and other developing nations.

KCA offers the public the chance to pay for these treatments directly. How can you help?

Resources at the UW Libraries

Faculty and academic personnel of Washington’s community colleges are entitled to use many of the resources of the University of Washington Libraries, including those at the Bothell and Tacoma campuses.

To borrow items from the UW Libraries, Green River Community College faculty and academic personnel must apply annually for a UW Libraries borrowing card. This can be done through the UW Library Cashier (Monday-Friday 9am – 5pm). If applying in person isn’t convenient, you can do it by fax or mail by submitting to the Library Cashier a statement describing your need to make use of the UW Libraries. You must include a copy of your GRCC identity card and be sure to include your work mailing address so the UW Libraries can mail you your new card.

UW borrowing privileges do not include access to interlibrary loan or remote access to databases.

Computer Access in the Library

Now that we are into the third week of the quarter, you are probably needing access to a computer to do assignments. Did you know that the library has over 100 computers available for your use? There is also an open computer lab in the Technology Center if you can't get on a computer in the library. Here are some things to know about the library computers:

Setting up an account to use these computers is easy. Your user name is your student identification number and you get to choose your own password. To choose or to change your password (you must do this each quarter) click on the "Reset Password" button on the login screen.
Your account includes access to your own space on the H drive for saving documents as well as access to the S and T drives.
Printing is a two-step process. First you need to send your prints and then you need to go to one of four print release stations and log in again, highlight your print jobs, and select print.
Each quarter students are allocated $40 worth of printing (paid for through the Student Technology Fee). Any remain balances will be carried forward into the next quarter. Black and white printing is 10 cents/page and color printing is $1.00/page.
Here is a sampling of what is available in the library's Information Commons: access to our library catalog and databases, the Microsoft Office Suite, scanners, and specialized software for students with disabilities.
School-related work has priority, especially during the peak hours of 9 AM to 1 PM.
If the classroom (HL213) is not being used for classes, this room is also available for student use.
Wireless access is available in the Information Commons to students who have their own laptop computers. Ask at the Reference Desk for an information sheet.
Student employees are available to help you with your computer problems. (And librarians are available to help you with your research.)

New Books

We have recently added several new items to our collection. To find out what has been recently added, you can peruse the New Books shelf on the second floor near the Reference Desk, or you can search our library catalog. Within the catalog, you will see a tab labeled "New Books"; however, it also allows you to search for media.

Clicking on the "New Books" tab will open a screen that allows you to:

search by the permanent location of an item (Main, Basic Skills, Videos and DVDs, etc.)

look for items added in the last month, two months, etc.

sort by call number, author, or title.

Armchair Travel via the Library of Congress Exhibitions

If you don't have the time or the money to travel this summer, consider experiencing some armchair travel via the Library of Congress Exhibitions. Located in Washington, DC, the Library of Congress is the world's largest library with more than 130 million items on 530 miles of bookshelves. The Library of Congress creates exhibits which are displayed in Washington, DC and which also travel. WebFeat Allows Users to Search Multiple Databases

Holman Library recently launched another new product: WebFeat. Because we know WebFeat won't mean much to most of our users, we've placed a red link at the top of our library web page that says "Search All Databases Now." And basically that is what WebFeat does. A single search in WebFeat will search the databases you select. This could be all databases and includes the library catalog. Or, you might choose to search one of our subject categories ("Health, Nursing, and Occupational/Physical Therapy") or one of our class categories ("English 113"). Within WebFeat you can limit by date or full text. You can use Boolean operators to combine your search terms, and you can specifiy what kind of search you want (e.g.: title, keyword, etc.).

Like most of our databases, you will need to enter your GRCC identification number when accessing from outside of the library.

Historical Newspapers in Washington

The Historical Newspapers in Washington is a project of the Washington State Library and is designed to allow students, teachers, and citizens greater access to our historical sources. The project began with the scanning of Washington's first newspaper, the Columbian, from Olympia and was followed by the scanning of the Walla Walla Statesman and the Washington Pioneer. Recently issues from the Spokane Falls Review and The Pioneer and Democrat were added. Users can choose from a subject list or search by keyword, personal name, date, city and county.
Historical newspapers "document the daily life of communities in a way that no history book can reproduce, from the grand scope of world events to the minutiae of lost horses and the claims of patent medicines. Business concerns buy space to advertise and legal notices announce the dissolution of partnerships. Births, deaths and marriages appear next to essays, poems and amusing anecdotes. They are a unique resource."
